Can I cancel a switch to Octopus if I change my mind?

By Matt · Published 4 November 2026

Yes, you can cancel a new household switch to Octopus during the 14-day cooling-off period. What happens next depends on whether Octopus has already started supplying your home.

This matters before you apply, especially if your current fixed deal has time left or you want an electric vehicle (EV) tariff after joining. A quick supplier switch can happen before cooling off ends. You can still cancel during cooling off, then arrange the contract that will cover your home.

Check three dates before applying

Keep your current tariff's end date, your Octopus application date and the intended supply start date together.

The old tariff's end date helps you check exit fees. The application starts the new switching process and matters for cooling off. The supply start date tells you when responsibility for supplying and billing your home changes.

Octopus's domestic terms describe cancellation within the 14 days following your application to switch. Check your confirmation and contact Octopus promptly if the deadline is unclear. Do not assume a fresh 14 days starts when the first bill arrives or the supply transfers.

If you want to join after your existing fix ends, ask for that date before submitting the application and keep the confirmation. Our fixed-tariff ending guide separates the exit-fee window from an existing Octopus customer's renewal options.

If Octopus has not started supplying you

Octopus accepts cooling-off cancellations by email or through its website. Sending the cancellation promptly gives it the chance to stop a switch that has yet to happen.

Citizens Advice's switching guidance says that if the switch has not happened, the new supplier stops it and you stay with the old supplier. Ask Octopus to confirm cancellation and whether either fuel has already transferred.

Your account or application reference and supply address help Octopus find the switch. Include the application date and say whether you are cancelling electricity, gas or both. Saving the message and reply gives you a record of the request.

Cancelling a Direct Debit is not the same as cancelling the supply contract. Octopus can confirm what will happen to any payment already taken when you cancel.

If your supply has already moved

You can still cancel during cooling off after Octopus starts supplying you. Returning to your previous supplier means agreeing the return and its tariff with that supplier.

Octopus's terms list three choices after supply has started: agree another contract with Octopus, enter an equivalent contract with your previous supplier or enter a contract with a different supplier. If you want to return, contact your previous supplier promptly as well as notifying Octopus of cancellation.

Citizens Advice explains 'equivalent terms' as terms and conditions similar to those you had before switching. Your previous supplier needs to confirm the return tariff and remaining term. It also needs to confirm the transfer date.

Citizens Advice's England guidance gives you 15 working days from when the new supplier explains your options to agree the next contract. If you return to your old supplier, it must offer similar terms within 16 working days of the day you switched to the new supplier. For your own deadline, use the guidance for your nation and ask both suppliers to confirm the dates while you arrange the next contract.

You still pay for the energy supplied

Octopus charges for supply from the day it starts until the next contract begins. If you cancel during cooling off, Octopus cannot charge an exit fee for that cancellation.

If you cancel while Octopus supplies your home, it continues supplying you under a 'deemed contract'. This covers continued supply without a new agreement. It lasts until another supplier takes over or you agree a new contract with Octopus. Octopus can confirm which tariff you will pay in the meantime.

Meter readings and photographs around each handover can help you spot billing errors. The bills should cover each supplier's supply period. Our switching process guide explains the normal handover and final-bill stages.

If your old supplier charges an exit fee

Your previous supplier handles any charge for leaving its contract. If an exit fee appears on the old final bill, ask that supplier how it has treated your original departure and any agreed return.

The old contract's end date and the transfer date help you check the fee against its terms. A saved reply from the supplier gives you a record alongside the cancellation confirmation.

Once cooling off ends, your agreement may include an exit fee. The fee terms in that agreement tell you whether one applies.

When your EV tariff starts

If you are joining for Intelligent Octopus Go, an EV tariff whose charging Octopus schedules, confirm which tariff supplies the home initially and what still needs to happen before the EV tariff activates. Our Intelligent Go joining checklist covers the meter and device setup.

The confirmed EV tariff start date tells you when you can rely on its charging schedule. For a move between Octopus tariffs, the tariff-change guide explains the steps.

What if the switch happened on the wrong date?

If Octopus missed your agreed switch date, the written confirmation helps it investigate. Send it the date you requested and ask what it can do to put things right. If you agreed to the switch and have since changed your mind, use the cooling-off process above.

If you never agreed to the transfer at all, report that explicitly. The energy regulator Ofgem's household switching guidance treats a switch made without permission separately. Any compensation depends on the switching problem and the rules that cover it.

When to wait before applying again

If your first switch is still being cancelled or a return is being arranged, wait for the suppliers to confirm who will supply each fuel and on which contract before applying again.
