Intelligent Octopus Go fixed rates before the July price cap: should EV drivers lock in?

Short answer: a fixed Intelligent Octopus Go offer can be worth comparing before the July price-cap period if your EV, charger, smart meter and household routine genuinely suit it. Do not lock in just because the national cap headline is higher. Check the whole-home quote, not the EV cheap rate alone.

Octopus Go remains the simpler fixed-window EV route from 00:30 to 05:30. Ofgem's July to September 2026 cap is now confirmed, but the cap is context for standard variable pricing rather than a personal bill ceiling.

This is a narrow EV tariff decision. The July price-cap rise makes fixed offers more visible, and Octopus is also telling Intelligent Octopus Go visitors that it is only offering fixed rates at the moment. That does not make Intelligent Go automatically right or wrong. It means the comparison has to be about the whole fixed smart-tariff setup.

If you charge an EV at home and Intelligent Octopus Go fits your car or charger, the fixed offer can still be attractive. You keep the guaranteed overnight whole-home cheap window, plus eligible smart charging when Octopus schedules the session through the app. The risk is treating that EV benefit as the whole bill.

Why fixed Intelligent Go is a different question

Intelligent Octopus Go is not just an overnight EV rate. The useful shape is the combination of a 23:30 to 05:30 cheap whole-home window, app-scheduled eligible EV charging, a compatible car or charger, half-hourly smart-meter data and smart-tariff terms that matter if readings or integrations fail.

When the offer is fixed, you are accepting a tariff shape for the fixed period. That can be reassuring before a cap rise, but it also means you should be happy with the day rate, standing charge, exit terms and smart-control requirements, not just the charging headline.

Octopus's July cap guide says Flexible and variable rates are expected to rise from 1 July, while fixed tariffs stay unchanged until the contract ends. That is the useful reason to compare fixed offers now. It is not a reason to skip the quote check.

What the July price cap does and does not tell you

Ofgem's July to September 2026 price cap is £1,862 a year for a typical dual-fuel Direct Debit household using Ofgem's typical-use assumptions. Ofgem also publishes average Direct Debit unit rates and standing charges for the period, but those figures vary by region, payment method and usage.

For an EV household, the headline cap can be especially misleading. Your electricity use may be much higher than a typical household, and a smart tariff can split that use across day, overnight and smart-scheduled charging periods. Use the cap as a warning that variable prices are moving, then compare your actual Octopus quotes.

What to compare before accepting

1. The whole-home quote

Use the live Octopus quote or account screen, not a remembered rate. Intelligent Octopus Go can have a very attractive smart-charging price, but the day rate, standing charge and exit-fee terms still matter. A low EV charging rate is less useful if most of your electricity is used outside the cheap window.

2. Your non-EV electricity

The overnight window applies to the whole home, so it can help with dishwashers, washing machines, batteries and other safe shiftable loads. It is still only one part of the bill. Heat pumps, electric heating, home working, cooking patterns, solar export and battery routines can all change the answer.

3. Compatibility and app control

Octopus says Intelligent Octopus Go needs a compatible EV or charger and a smart meter it can use. You tell the app what charge you need and when you need the car by, then Octopus schedules the charging. Immediate charging, manual Boost, conflicting car or charger schedules and missing data can change the billing outcome.

4. The smart-tariff terms

Octopus smart-tariff terms say smart import tariffs rely on smart meters, integrations and third-party systems. They also say Octopus cannot use third-party app data for billing. Keep the evidence tidy: account quotes, tariff start date, app screenshots, meter readings, charging schedules and statements.

Who should seriously compare fixed Intelligent Go now?

Fixed Intelligent Octopus Go is most worth a close look if:

  • you charge an EV at home most weeks
  • your car or charger is compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go
  • Octopus can take reliable half-hourly readings from your smart meter
  • you can move a useful share of home electricity into the overnight window
  • you want price certainty during the July to September cap period
  • you are comfortable with app-scheduled charging rather than controlling every session yourself

It may be less compelling if:

  • your EV mileage is low or you rarely charge at home
  • your setup is not compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go
  • your smart meter is not sending reliable half-hourly readings
  • your daytime household use dominates the bill
  • you may need to switch smart tariffs again soon
  • you mainly want a simple overnight tariff without app-controlled smart charging

When standard Octopus Go may be simpler

Standard Octopus Go has a fixed 00:30 to 05:30 overnight window and works with any EV or charger, subject to the smart-meter requirements. It does not depend on Octopus controlling a compatible car or charger in the same way.

That can make Go the cleaner route if you want a predictable overnight window and do not need extra smart-scheduled charging. Intelligent Go is more powerful when the compatible setup works well and the car charging is large enough to justify the extra complexity.

A practical decision order

  1. Check the live Intelligent Octopus Go quote for your postcode and account.
  2. Check standard Go as the simpler EV benchmark.
  3. Put your annual mileage and non-EV electricity into the EV calculator.
  4. Check whether any fixed-tariff exit fee would matter if you changed your mind.
  5. Confirm your smart meter, car or charger and app setup are compatible.
  6. Only then decide whether the fixed Intelligent Go offer is worth accepting.
