Octopus Charge Pack: how the home-battery add-on works

The main decision is whether the credit is worth giving one service control of the battery. Check the tariff pairing, export setup, battery compatibility, warranty position and the way credits appear on the account before signing up.
What Charge Pack changes
Charge Pack gives Octopus permission to charge or discharge a supported home battery when the grid has too much or too little electricity. Octopus says it monitors energy-market forecasts, gives as much notice as possible and may instruct the battery to charge or discharge during a session.
Outside those sessions, Octopus says the battery returns to its normal tariff-optimising schedule. Your import tariff does not become a Charge Pack tariff. The add-on sits alongside an eligible import tariff and Outgoing Octopus export.
Octopus's Charge Pack FAQ listed Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Go, Flexible and Fixed as compatible import choices when checked on 11 September 2026. Cosy customers could register interest but were not included in the normal joining route. Check the live FAQ before treating that list as permanent.
What the battery does on a normal day
Octopus's 14 August Charge Pack explainer gives a clearer picture of the everyday schedule. On Intelligent Octopus Go or Octopus Go with Outgoing, Octopus says it normally charges the battery during the overnight off-peak window, uses the battery for household demand during the day and exports only when its forecast expects enough charge to remain for the home. It aims to bring the battery back towards its minimum state of charge before the next off-peak window.
For a standard variable tariff with Outgoing, the published routine is self-consumption through the day, with grid export only during a Charge Pack session. The explainer does not set out every Fixed-tariff or battery-model edge case, so ask Octopus what the normal schedule will be for the exact account and hardware rather than assuming every eligible tariff behaves identically.
How the £12 minimum and session credits work
When checked on 17 August 2026, Octopus said an enrolled customer would receive a minimum of £12 for a full month. The 14 August explainer says that minimum is prorated for the exact number of enrolled days when someone joins part-way through a month. Session credits and bonuses count towards the minimum, with a top-up when their total is lower. Treat this as a dated product term, not a permanent battery-saving assumption. Confirm the live amount and eligibility before counting it in an annual payback calculation.
Monthly minimum
Octopus says it tops up the account at the end of the month so session credits and bonuses reach at least the full or prorated minimum.
Session compensation
Octopus says it uses reasonable endeavours to add the related credit within 14 business days of each session or otherwise at the end of the month.
If a session imports electricity at the day rate, Octopus says the credit reduces the effective charging cost to the cheaper off-peak rate. If the battery exports, Octopus says it credits the difference between the import day rate and export rate. A separate session bonus can also apply, with the amount given in the notification email. The normal bill continues as usual, so the initial charge and later credit may not appear together.
The practical check is the account ledger, not one app graph. Record the session time, half-hourly meter data, import and export entries and the later account credit. Battery and inverter apps can help explain what the system did, but they are not the final Octopus billing record.
Who can join Charge Pack?
Octopus currently says you need all of the following:
- Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Go, Flexible or a Fixed tariff for import
- Outgoing Octopus for export
- the Octopus Energy app and a working smart meter sending import and export reads, with consent for half-hourly readings
- a supported home battery
- no other smart battery optimiser controlling the same battery
Outgoing enrolment can involve an export MPAN, a working smart-meter export connection and a first export reading. Confirm that export is active rather than assuming a solar or inverter app proves Octopus can settle it.
The current Charge Pack terms also say Octopus may ask for G98 or G99 certification, a solar MCS certificate and evidence of any Feed-in Tariff. They say you must not keep receiving FiT export payments from another provider while enrolled. Check that position with Octopus and the FiT provider before changing an existing payment arrangement.
On 11 September 2026, Octopus listed AlphaESS, EcoFlow, Enphase, FoxESS, GivEnergy, HanchuESS, Huawei, Sigenergy and SolarEdge as eligible. Tesla, Solax, LuxPower, Solis, Goodwe, Duracell and Hinen were listed as coming soon. A brand name is not enough for a purchase decision. Check the exact model, firmware, account connection and live eligibility route before joining or buying hardware.
Can you opt out of one session?
Not under the current public FAQ. Octopus says customers are automatically included in all sessions while enrolled so the battery automation can work correctly. It says it aims to give as much notice as possible, up to a day ahead.
The newer explainer names four possible instructions: a Power out session discharges to the grid, a Charge up session absorbs surplus electricity, a pre-charge instruction fills the battery before a later discharge and a pre-discharge instruction creates room before charging. Check the notification window and keep evidence from any linked instruction rather than assuming every session is a simple export event.
You can leave Charge Pack through the opt-out form or email route in the FAQ. That is different from declining one individual session while remaining enrolled.
This matters if you keep the battery at a reserve level for backup, have a carefully tuned solar routine or need manual control on particular days. Ask Octopus how reserve settings, outage backup and manufacturer controls interact with Charge Pack before joining. The public FAQ does not answer every model-specific control or warranty question.

Standard Flux was available when checked on 4 August 2026. Intelligent Octopus Flux was marked temporarily unavailable during volatile energy prices. Check both live pages before presenting either as an alternative.
Check for competing battery controls
Charge Pack cannot currently be combined with another smart battery optimiser. This is more than an admin rule. Two services can ask the same battery to charge, discharge or hold energy for different reasons.
Octopus also warns that a connected EV and home battery can compete for the same overnight capacity. It says Intelligent Octopus Go and Charge Pack share a platform and can be coordinated, but some car, charger and battery combinations can still behave unexpectedly. If the battery misses its normal charge on a night when the EV is plugged in, keep the schedule, device and meter evidence and ask Octopus to inspect that specific interaction.
Before joining, write down every active control route:
- the battery or inverter schedule
- solar self-consumption settings
- backup reserve or minimum state of charge
- EV charger and car schedules
- home-automation rules
- any third-party flexibility, demand-response or battery service
Choose one primary optimiser and remove conflicting schedules only through the supported app or installer route. Do not disconnect safety equipment or change protected installer settings merely to make the add-on work.
Questions to answer before joining
- Is the exact battery supported now? A coming-soon brand is not current eligibility.
- Is Outgoing fully active? Check the export MPAN, enrolment and half-hourly export readings.
- Who controls the battery today? Identify existing optimiser and home-automation connections.
- What reserve do you need? Consider backup power, evening use, EV charging and winter solar.
- What does the warranty allow? Ask the manufacturer or installer about automated cycling and remote control for the exact model.
- How will you reconcile credits? Keep the session notice, meter data, bill and account-credit evidence together.
- Would a tariff change be a bigger decision? Charge Pack should not make an unsuitable whole-home import tariff or export pairing look suitable.
The practical verdict
Charge Pack may suit a household that already has an eligible tariff, active Outgoing export, a supported battery and no competing optimiser. It may also suit someone who prefers automation and is comfortable with Octopus deciding when the battery charges or discharges for sessions.
Wait if the battery is only listed as coming soon, the export setup is incomplete, the reserve or warranty position is unclear or you need to approve each session. A minimum monthly credit does not remove the need to compare the whole battery routine and tariff pairing.
