Two electricity MPANs: switching to Octopus

By Matt · Published 24 October 2026

If your bill shows two electricity supply numbers, ask Octopus to confirm the complete meter arrangement and quote before requesting a switch. Do not leave one number out just to get through an online form. The questions are which supplies would move, how each would be charged and whether any heating or hot-water controls need attention.

An MPAN is the identifier for an electricity supply, not the serial number on the physical meter. Octopus distinguishes import MPANs for electricity bought from the grid from export MPANs for electricity sold back. Two numbers therefore do not always mean two separate household import supplies.

First, work out which numbers you have

Two readings on one meter

Day and night readings are registers, not automatically separate MPANs. Octopus's meter-reading guide shows how a meter can display separate peak and off-peak readings. If your question is whether to keep two-rate pricing, our Economy 7 or single-rate guide explains the cost comparison.

More than one import MPAN

Some heating arrangements have more than one supply point. Octopus describes a seven-terminal Liberty 116 setup with a primary MPAN for the main household electricity and a secondary one usually dedicated to off-peak heating. EDF's complex-meter guidance also lists Economy 10 arrangements with one or two MPANs and Economy 9 with two.

Those are examples, not a way to identify your setup from the tariff name alone. Ask the supplier whether your import MPANs are related and what each serves. If one appears to serve a garage, annexe or separate part of the property, have that arrangement checked rather than assuming it is the same as a restricted heating supply.

An import and an export MPAN

If you have solar, the second number may belong to export. Octopus says an account with an export tariff has a separate electricity section showing its export MPAN. Keep import and export questions separate when asking about the switch; an export number is not a substitute for the import supply number.

If the address or supply identifiers do not match your bill, use our quote and address-check guide first.

Ask for a quote covering the actual arrangement

Citizens Advice says to check that the new tariff will work with your meter before switching. For a traditional time-of-use meter, it specifically recommends contacting the prospective supplier first.

Use Octopus's official contact options and explain that the home has more than one electricity MPAN. A useful message is:

I am comparing a switch to Octopus. My bill shows more than one electricity MPAN. Please confirm which MPANs belong to this arrangement, which would transfer and the tariff and standing charges for each. Please also confirm whether the proposed tariff supports my heating and hot-water controls, and whether any meter work is needed before the switch.

Include the full address, current tariff and the MPANs shown on your bill. Where safely accessible, keep photographs showing the meter serial numbers and register labels. Send personal documents only through the supplier's official support channels, not to this independent site.

Before accepting the offer, ask for these points in writing:

  • Supply points: which MPANs the quote includes and which the switch request would move.
  • Prices: the unit rates, standing charges and payment method for the complete arrangement, not just one part of it.
  • Consumption: which annual kWh and registers the estimate uses, with no usage omitted or counted twice.
  • Controls: whether separately controlled heating or hot water will continue operating as intended.
  • Meter work: whether any replacement or configuration change is required, who would arrange it and what costs or timing apply.
  • Contract: any relevant exit fees and the proposed supply-start date.

These are questions for your particular quote, not a promise that every setup can join every Octopus tariff. An online form that cannot handle the arrangement is a reason to seek confirmation, not a diagnosis of the meter or proof that switching is impossible.

Do two MPANs mean two standing charges?

Do not assume either answer from the number of MPANs alone. Compare the complete written quote with what you pay now.

Ofgem's May 2025 restricted-meter decision says multiple standing charges are not automatically prohibited by price-cap protections. For the relevant default-tariff customers, it says the aggregate charges must comply with the cap. That is not a universal promise of one standing charge, nor a claim that every pair of supplies falls within the same restricted-meter category.

If a charge looks wrong, ask the supplier to explain how it has classified the supplies and calculated the bill. Keep that billing question separate from whether the new offer is suitable. Another household's refund or meter change does not establish the terms of your quote.

Do not treat a tariff change as a wiring fix

If the existing meter controls heating or hot water, establish what will happen to those controls before agreeing to a change. Do not alter meter wiring, request removal of a supply point on guesswork or assume a smart-meter installation will combine everything into one MPAN.

Our RTS and multi-rate handover guide covers readings and replacement evidence. It complements the quote check rather than replacing confirmation of which supply points will transfer.

Once the whole quote is clear

Compare the full annual cost using the same consumption and the complete set of charges. Check the meter requirements and any exit fees before deciding whether to move. Citizens Advice recommends comparing the new offer with the tariffs available from your current supplier too.

If Octopus still suits the home, the referral page explains the direct-signup step using our referral link. Resolve how Octopus will handle the complete supply arrangement first; do not assume a normal online signup or a reward applies to every setup.

If Octopus fits your home, our referral link can get you £50 credit once your switch is complete. Existing customer? Find out how you can benefit too. T&Cs apply (only one switching offer per household).
