Octopus VWAN smart meters: can broadband fix a poor signal?
By Matt · Published 11 September 2026
If your smart meter cannot send readings because the normal smart-meter network has little or no signal, Octopus is trialling another route. Virtual Wide Area Network, usually shortened to VWAN, can use your home broadband to connect the meter securely to the national smart-meter network.
The important limitation is that VWAN is still a trial. It is an engineer-installed solution for suitable homes, not a device that every customer can order online. It may help with a genuine Wide Area Network coverage problem, but it will not fix every meter, account or billing fault.
When VWAN might help
VWAN may be relevant when all three of these points are true:
- the home has little or no usable smart-meter WAN coverage
- reliable Wi-Fi is available close to the electricity meter
- Octopus confirms that the property is suitable for its trial and arranges an engineer visit
A poor connection does not interrupt your energy supply. If broadband drops out, the smart meter can retain readings and send them after the connection returns. Until Octopus confirms VWAN is working, keep submitting any meter readings it asks for and check the readings used on your statements.
What VWAN actually changes
A smart-meter setup uses two different networks:
- The Home Area Network, or HAN, connects devices inside the property. This is the local link between the electricity meter, gas meter and in-home display.
- The Wide Area Network, or WAN, connects the smart-meter system to the secure Data Communications Company network used by suppliers.
VWAN provides an alternative route for the second connection. A Virtual WAN Device uses the household's broadband rather than relying only on the usual mobile or radio coverage. Government guidance says the customer must consent to that use of their broadband.
Octopus says one of its engineers installs the device, connects it to Wi-Fi and pairs it with the smart meter. Its current trial guidance says the device needs to remain within five metres of the meter.
VWAN is not the same as an Octopus Home Mini
The distinction matters because both devices can use Wi-Fi.
An Octopus Home Mini is designed to show near-live electricity use in the Octopus app. It connects to the meter's HAN. Its app data can help you understand what happened, but it does not replace the meter data Octopus needs for billing.
VWAN is intended to restore the secure WAN route used for automatic readings and smart-meter services. Ordering or troubleshooting a Home Mini is therefore not a substitute for diagnosing a No WAN problem.
Who is the trial for?
The Octopus trial is aimed at homes with little or no usable 4G signal but stable Wi-Fi at the meter location. Smart DCC says the first installations have taken place across Great Britain. The Government's post-2025 framework describes VWAN as a route for premises without WAN coverage where the customer consents to broadband use.
That does not mean every weak-signal report will qualify. A meter can stop communicating for several reasons, including:
- a WAN or communications-hub fault
- a HAN problem between the meters and in-home display
- commissioning or account-setup errors
- a meter exchange that has left the wrong serial number or register mapping on the account
- missing half-hourly data even though occasional readings still arrive
VWAN is designed for the first type of problem. It does not correct inaccurate measurements, reversed registers or an account that has been set up against the wrong meter.
What happens if your Wi-Fi changes?
Your electricity and gas supplies do not depend on Wi-Fi. Losing broadband should not cut the power or stop the meter from measuring energy.
Octopus says the smart meter stores readings while broadband is unavailable and sends them when the connection is restored. If you replace the router or change the Wi-Fi password, the connection details on the Virtual WAN Device will need updating. Its current guidance gives separate steps for Chameleon IHD 7 and SeeZero devices.
The trial is currently free, according to Octopus. That is a trial condition rather than a promise about any future wider offer, so confirm the position before agreeing to an installation.
Does VWAN guarantee access to a smart tariff?
No. Restoring reliable meter communication can remove one practical obstacle, but each smart tariff has its own eligibility rules.
Octopus's smart-tariff terms require a compatible smart meter and permission to collect half-hourly readings. Some tariffs also depend on a compatible car, charger, heat pump or battery. A working VWAN connection does not override those product checks.
Once the installation is complete, verify that half-hourly readings are reaching Octopus and that the account has been commissioned correctly before relying on a time-of-use tariff. Check the first statement against the meter, not only the in-home display, charger app or Home Mini graph.
What to ask Octopus
If support says the meter has a poor signal, ask for a diagnosis rather than assuming VWAN is automatically the answer:
- Is the fault on the WAN, HAN, communications hub, meter or account commissioning?
- Is the property recorded as having no usable WAN coverage?
- Is it suitable for the current VWAN trial?
- Would an engineer need access to the meter and Wi-Fi at the meter location?
- What readings should you submit while automatic data is unavailable?
- How will Octopus confirm that half-hourly readings are arriving after the work?
Keep photographs of the meter serial number and current registers, copies of submitted readings, statements and any engineer notes. If a smart tariff is involved, also keep the dates of missing half-hourly data and any tariff-change messages.
The practical conclusion
VWAN is a useful new option for a narrow but real problem: a home that cannot obtain reliable smart-meter WAN coverage but does have stable broadband near the meter. It is not a universal Wi-Fi upgrade for every smart meter and it is not the same as a Home Mini.
Treat the current offer as an assessed, engineer-installed trial. Ask Octopus to identify the failed connection first, keep manual billing evidence while automatic readings are unavailable and verify half-hourly readings before depending on a smart tariff.
Check the meter problem before the tariff
If the meter is already fitted but not sending readings, start with the repair and evidence guide. For supplier handover problems, check that the right meter and registers are attached to the account.
