Octopus Weekend Happy Hours: how free electricity works

Octopus Weekend Happy Hours turns two successful Power Down sessions into one free hour of imported electricity at the weekend. The current offer runs until 1 November 2026, and banked hours must be used before it ends.

The hour is not free at the meter. Octopus measures the two half-hour settlement periods, bills them at the import rate that applies, then adds a matching account credit for eligible import. The total credit is capped at 16kWh.

How to earn a Weekend Happy Hour

Join Octoplus and Saving Sessions.
Opt in to each Power Down session before it begins.
Reduce electricity use below the baseline in two separate sessions.
Wait for both successful results to appear on the Saving Sessions dashboard.
Choose an available weekend slot before it starts.

You need a working electricity smart meter sharing half-hourly readings. Octoplus also requires an active monthly Direct Debit unless you use an eligible smart prepayment meter.

Opting in twice does not guarantee the reward. Both sessions must show as successful. Octopus calculates the baseline from recent comparable days and uses net import and export where an export MPAN is linked to the property.

The public FAQ says results usually take about three working days. The specific terms allow up to five business days, so five business days is the safer point at which to treat a missing result as late.

How to book the free hour

Once two successful Power Downs are recorded, the Happy Hour should appear in your stash on the Saving Sessions dashboard. Octopus aims to show the coming weekend's slots on Thursday and no later than midnight on Friday, unless a data or system problem delays them.

Slots will usually be on Sunday during the day, but grid conditions can change the times or mean no Happy Hour runs that weekend. Capacity is limited. If one slot is full, choose another available time or bank the hour for a later weekend.

What “free electricity” means on the bill

Octopus calculates the credit from imported kWh and the import unit rate applying in each half hour of the booked slot. Electricity above the 16kWh cap is billed normally. Electricity and gas standing charges continue as normal, and gas use is not included.

The rate detail matters on a smart tariff. An Intelligent Octopus Go half hour could be billed at an eligible smart-charging rate or the normal rate. An Agile half hour could already be very cheap or negative. The credit follows the actual applicable import rate rather than a separate national Happy Hour rate.

A manual EV boost does not multiply the benefit. It can simply make both the bill line and matching credit larger. Keep the normal charging plan where it fits and check the later account credit against the half-hourly import data.

Octopus says the credit is usually added within 14 business days of the scheduled hour, although it can occasionally take longer. It may arrive after the dashboard first shows the hour as used.

Smart tariffs, solar and batteries

Intelligent Octopus Go

Intelligent Octopus Go customers can take part. Octopus suggests plugging the EV in shortly before the selected hour so smart charging has time to start. Eligible import across the home is credited during the booked hour, not just the car's charging use.

Agile Octopus

Agile customers can also join, but a Happy Hour may have little extra value when the selected half-hourly prices are already very low or negative. A well-automated Agile home may also find it harder to reduce further during weekday peak sessions. Do not disrupt a sensible whole-home routine just to chase the reward.

Charge Pack and Intelligent Octopus Flux

Octopus gives product-specific scheduling guidance for managed batteries. Charge Pack customers should compare the Happy Hour with the battery-session notification. Octopus currently suggests 11:00 to 12:00 for Intelligent Octopus Flux where that slot is offered because it is more likely to overlap with battery charging. Use the live dashboard rather than assuming every weekend will be the same.

Solar and home batteries

Only imported electricity is credited. Export remains under the normal export tariff and does not increase the Happy Hour credit. A bright daytime slot may therefore be worth less to a solar home than a cloudy one.

Move flexible use only where it is safe and useful. Avoid making the car, charger, battery, inverter and Octopus app all compete to schedule the same hour. Pick one main control route, then check the final half-hourly import data.

What if readings or rewards are missing?

Octopus's public FAQ says it will use the participating-customer average when Happy Hour data is missing and will still award an hour after a Power Down meter glitch. The current terms are more cautious and allow Octopus to withhold or estimate eligibility and credits when readings are missing or unreadable.

Keep a small evidence pack rather than assuming either outcome:

the accepted Power Down sessions and their results
the selected Happy Hour and booking time
charger, battery or app activity as supporting evidence
the Octopus statement and account credit when it arrives

Third-party app screenshots can explain what happened, but Octopus calculates the reward from smart-meter import data and its terms. If two successful sessions are visible but no hour appears after five business days, contact Octopus with the session dates and screenshots. If a used hour still has no matching credit after the normal 14-business-day window, ask Octopus to check the two half-hour import periods and the rate applied to each.

The practical verdict

Weekend Happy Hours is a useful extra for homes already eligible for Octoplus and Saving Sessions. It is not a reason to choose the wrong tariff, add unsafe electrical load or abandon a sensible solar, battery or EV schedule.
