Plug-in solar UK: what Octopus customers should check

Plug-in solar is a small solar system that feeds electricity into the home's circuits through a standard plug and socket. It is meant to reduce daytime grid import, not replace a rooftop array or power every high-load appliance.
The legal change applies in Great Britain. Energy Saving Trust's current checklist says plug-in solar is not yet permitted in Northern Ireland.
What changed on 27 August 2026
The new rules allow a compliant plug-in microgenerator to connect through a standard plug and socket. The device's maximum rated AC output must not exceed 800W and it must meet the Government's interim product specification. This category covers solar generation, not a plug-in battery designed to import electricity for storage.
The panels themselves can have a combined rating above 800W. The important limit is the AC output entering the home, controlled by the microinverter. Do not treat a generic solar panel, inverter or familiar-looking three-pin plug as proof that the complete product complies.
Ofgem approved the related G98 network-code change, but its decision is deliberately narrow. It covers network safety, supply quality and operability. It does not by itself prove product legality, consumer protection or electrical safety inside a particular home.
Six checks before you buy
- Check the exact device. Find the make and model in the ENA Connect Direct device register. Check the complete bundle and instructions, not just the panel brand.
- Check permission. Tenants, leaseholders and people in managed buildings may need approval from a landlord, freeholder or building manager. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some mounting positions can also need planning or building checks.
- Check the building. Full-size panels are heavy and exposed to wind. The wall, outbuilding, balcony or ground mount must safely carry the product without damaging cladding, waterproofing, fire safety or communal areas.
- Check the electrics. The device must connect directly to a suitable mains socket. Do not use an extension lead, cable reel, travel adaptor or multiway adaptor. A weatherproof outdoor socket must be suitable and properly installed.
- Check the protection. Electrical Safety First recommends at least a Type A bidirectional RCD on the intended circuit and an electrician's assessment where the installation or protective devices are uncertain. Older rewireable fuse boxes are a clear reason to stop and get advice.
- Check insurance and warranties. Ask how an outdoor installation affects buildings, contents and product cover, especially in a flat or rented home.
Registration is a requirement, not an optional extra
Energy Saving Trust says the device must be registered using the UK Plug-In Solar Registration service. The process asks for the customer's name, postcode and device make and model so the electricity network can account for the generation.

At publication, myplugin.solar still displayed Coming Soon. Buying a bundle and seeing a legal start date does not remove the registration requirement. Check that the service accepts your details before connecting and operating the device.
Octopus's own explainer currently refers to notifying the local Distribution Network Operator using G98. The Energy Saving Trust checklist points households to the national registration site. Until the launch process is fully aligned, keep the product paperwork and follow the live registration instructions rather than guessing which form replaces which step.
What the Octopus bundles include
Octopus now offers one-panel and two-panel bundles for delivery by the end of September 2026. The published bundle description includes full-size 460W panels, a floor or wall mount, a microinverter and a five-metre cable with a three-pin plug. Octopus customers can monitor generation in the Octopus app.
The current panels are about 1.8m by 1.1m and weigh about 22kg each. That makes the bundle more suitable for a secure garden, patio or external wall than a casual balcony setup. Smaller products may arrive later, but do not buy an unverified marketplace device just because it is lighter or cheaper.
No bundle price or saving estimate is used here. Both can date quickly, and the useful test is the home's daytime electricity use, shade, orientation, safe mounting and permission rather than the headline saving.
Self-consumption comes before export income
Plug-in solar first offsets electricity being used in the home while the panels are generating. A fridge, router, laptop or other daytime background load is a better match than an electric shower, oven or EV charger. If generation exceeds the home's immediate use, the surplus can flow to the grid.
Octopus says a qualifying household can check an export tariff such as Outgoing Octopus. Do not count that payment before Octopus confirms the export route for the account. Export tariffs can need a working export-capable smart meter, export MPAN, product evidence and other enrolment checks. A small system may also export very little when daytime use absorbs most of its generation.
If the home already has rooftop solar or a battery, ask the original installer or a qualified electrician whether the extra device affects the existing setup. The DNO may need an additional notification if total export changes. Keep the plug-in system separate from any battery automation until the manufacturer, installer and tariff rules are clear.
A safe decision order
- Confirm plug-in solar is permitted in your nation and at your property.
- Check the exact complete device in the ENA register.
- Get landlord, freeholder, building-manager, planning and insurance answers where relevant.
- Check the mounting location, socket, circuit and protective devices.
- Make sure the registration service is operational and complete the required process.
- Estimate value from daytime self-consumption before adding any possible export payment.
The practical verdict
Plug-in solar can open a small, movable generation option for some renters, flats and homes without a suitable roof. It is not literally plug-and-forget. The compliant product, property permission, secure mounting, electrical protection and registration checks decide whether it is suitable.
