Leaving Utility Warehouse energy for Octopus: check the bundle

By Matt · Published 26 October 2026

You do not have to treat every service on a Utility Warehouse bill as one indivisible contract. UW's residential terms say that customers taking more than one service have a separate agreement for each. Moving the energy supply can still change which bundle benefits you qualify for.

Before switching to Octopus, compare the new energy quote with the cost of the UW services you intend to keep. A lower energy estimate is only part of the decision if your remaining discounts or an earlier switching credit also change.

Can I move the energy and keep broadband or mobile?

Start by deciding exactly what you want to move: electricity, gas or both. Then tell UW which other services you intend to retain and ask it to confirm the resulting prices and benefits for your account. Do not send a request to close every service if your intention is only to change the energy supplier.

UW's service-cancellation guidance warns that moving one service can affect multiservice savings. Its residential terms distinguish the separate agreements from the bundle benefits, which depend on the number and type of qualifying live services.

Separate agreements do not mean every price, discount or perk stays the same. Check the terms and notices that apply to your actual services, especially if you joined on an older package. A statement about today's new-customer bundle does not establish the conditions of a longstanding account.

Compare what you will actually pay after the move

Use the same expected annual electricity and gas consumption for both energy quotes. Check the unit rates, standing charges, payment method, tariff term and any energy exit fee. If your tariff has day and night rates, use both consumption figures rather than treating every unit as overnight electricity.

Then add the services you are keeping with UW, using their prices after the proposed energy move. Ask for a written explanation of any discount that would end, change or continue. Keep one-off switching costs separate from the expected ongoing bills, so you can see both the first-year cost and the position afterwards.

Do not compare the entire current UW monthly payment with an energy-only Octopus Direct Debit. The first may include broadband, mobile or other services; the second is a payment towards the energy account. Our Direct Debit guide explains why a quoted monthly payment is not itself the price of the tariff.

A cashback balance or introductory credit is not the same as a permanent reduction in the cost of electricity. Count only benefits you genuinely qualify for and expect to use. There is no need to buy another service you do not want just to make a headline energy discount available.

Check fees and any earlier switching credit separately

UW's energy-leaving guidance says a fixed tariff can have an exit fee and directs customers to the Supply Details on their bill and the applicable terms. Check the exact tariff rather than assuming every UW product has the same fee.

Citizens Advice's energy-switching guidance explains the final 49-day exit-fee window for fixed energy contracts. That energy rule is not a promise that you can cancel a broadband or mobile contract without its own charges.

If UW previously reimbursed another provider's early-termination fee when you joined, ask whether moving energy would trigger repayment under your applicable offer. Current UW residential terms include a bundle-qualification condition for that credit. Do not assume the repayment condition applies to every reward or customer, or that an energy exit-fee exemption removes a separate promotional repayment obligation.

If you are not cancelling the telecoms services, do not include their cancellation fees as though you had already decided to leave them. Instead confirm whether their ongoing prices or benefits change. If you later want to move those services too, check their own agreements and switching process separately.

Choose the Octopus tariff for your home

An Octopus quote is not automatically cheaper because it is separate from a bundle. Compare the actual tariff offered for your postcode, meter and payment arrangement with the energy and retained-service costs above.

For an EV tariff, check the vehicle, home-charging setup, smart meter and any supported car or charger connection before relying on a cheaper charging period. Compare household use as well as the car. Moving the energy supply and activating a specialist smart tariff can be separate steps; our Intelligent Go joining checklist explains what to confirm.

For storage heating or a two-rate meter, read the Economy 7 versus single-rate guide. If you have two electricity supply numbers, use the two-MPAN switching checks before submitting a request. Those details need an actual suitable quote, not an assumption that every standard switch covers the setup.

Let the new supplier handle the energy switch

Once you have chosen a suitable quote, the new supplier normally arranges the energy transfer with the old supplier. UW's energy-leaving guidance describes that process; it is different from cancelling all the services on a multiservice account.

Keep the quote, applicable UW terms, confirmation of retained-service prices and meter readings around the switch date. Check UW's final energy bill against the handover, while continuing to check charges for services that remain with UW.

Do not cancel the UW Direct Debit just because Octopus starts supplying energy. UW says to leave it in place for the final payment or refund, and you may still be paying it for other services. Resolve the final energy balance and ongoing-service payment arrangements with UW rather than assuming the whole account has closed.

The useful question is not whether a bundle or a standalone supplier is always better. It is whether the energy tariff you can actually use, plus the services and conditions left behind, makes the move worthwhile for your home. Compare first; if Octopus still fits, the referral page explains the signup route.

If Octopus fits your home, our referral link can get you £50 credit once your switch is complete. Existing customer? Find out how you can benefit too. T&Cs apply (only one switching offer per household).
