Can I fix gas separately and keep Intelligent Octopus Go?

By Matt · Published 19 September 2026

Short answer: yes. Intelligent Octopus Go is an electricity tariff, so you can usually keep it while choosing gas separately. Check that any quote or account change names gas only. Octopus's public quote currently offers dual fuel or electricity only, not a standalone gas-only choice, so existing customers may need to contact Octopus for a gas-only change.

If Intelligent Octopus Go still suits your EV and electricity use, you do not automatically have to move your gas onto the same deal. Gas and electricity are separate supplies. You can have Octopus for electricity and another supplier for gas, or keep both fuels with Octopus on separate tariff arrangements.

The useful question is not only whether the account can be split. Check whether Intelligent Octopus Go still suits the whole home's electricity use, whether the gas option is genuinely better after standing charges and exit fees and whether the quote or account journey will make the gas change without disturbing electricity.

Why the two fuels can be treated separately

Octopus's general terms define energy as gas, electricity or both, according to the application or what has otherwise been agreed. Ofgem also treats gas and electricity as separate supplies when customers switch.

The clearest Octopus answer is in its Go FAQ. It says Go is an electricity tariff, that a dual-fuel customer can use a standard Octopus gas tariff and that an electricity-only customer can keep gas with another supplier.

Intelligent Octopus Go adds EV, charger, smart-meter and half-hourly-reading conditions, but it remains the electricity part of the setup. The gas supplier does not make the EV tariff eligible. Your electricity meter, compatible car or charger and current Intelligent Go terms do.

Three ways the split can work

1. Intelligent Go electricity and Octopus gas

Your electricity can stay on Intelligent Octopus Go while gas sits on a separate Octopus gas tariff available to your account. Do not assume the gas terms are included in the Intelligent Go name. Check the gas tariff, end date, standing charge, unit rate and exit fee separately.

The public Octopus quote currently presents two supply choices: gas and electricity together, or electricity only. It does not show a standalone gas-only choice. If you already have both fuels with Octopus and want to change only gas, check the account journey carefully and contact Octopus if it is not explicit.

2. Intelligent Go electricity and gas elsewhere

This is possible because the two fuels have separate supply registrations. If gas currently sits on the same Octopus account as electricity, make clear to the new supplier that you are switching gas only. Keep the quote or confirmation showing the fuel and proposed start date, then check the final gas bill and the next Octopus electricity statement.

3. A gas fix with Intelligent Go left unchanged

Treat a gas fix as a gas decision. A gas-only contract should identify only the gas supply. A dual-fuel quote covers both fuels and may replace the electricity tariff you wanted to keep.

If the journey is unclear, stop before accepting it. Ask the supplier to confirm in writing that the electricity supply and Intelligent Octopus Go tariff will remain unchanged.

Does the October price-cap change make a gas fix sensible?

Not automatically. Octopus's current October guidance says the latest price-cap movement is mainly gas-led. That is a reason to examine the gas part of the bill separately, especially if Intelligent Octopus Go still works well for the EV and the home's electricity pattern. It is not proof that every gas fix is cheaper.

Compare the full annual gas cost, including:

  • the unit rate and standing charge
  • expected annual gas use
  • the tariff end date and any exit fee
  • payment-method differences
  • whether the rate is fixed or variable

A lower-looking unit rate can be offset by a higher standing charge or an exit fee. A fix can help with budgeting, but it can also leave you paying more if variable gas prices fall.

Check the electricity decision too

Keeping Intelligent Octopus Go makes sense only if the electricity tariff still fits the home. Check that:

  • the compatible EV or charger remains connected
  • Octopus is receiving half-hourly readings from the electricity meter
  • the 23:30 to 05:30 whole-home window and eligible smart charging suit your routine
  • daytime electricity costs do not outweigh the EV benefit
  • Charge Cap or other charging targets are set as intended
  • the tariff on the statement matches the tariff in the app or account

Do not judge Intelligent Octopus Go from the EV charging rate alone. Compare the household's annual electricity pattern, including daytime use, standing charges and safe loads that can move into the fixed overnight window.

A safe order for changing gas only

  1. Check the current electricity and gas tariff names on the latest statement.
  2. Save the electricity tariff details and current Intelligent Octopus Go terms.
  3. Get a gas-only quote. Do not accept a dual-fuel quote if electricity should stay unchanged.
  4. Confirm any exit fee on the existing gas tariff.
  5. If both fuels are with Octopus, ask for confirmation when the online account does not offer an explicit gas-only change.
  6. If gas is moving supplier, give the opening gas reading when asked and keep a dated photograph.
  7. Check the old gas supplier's final bill and any credit refund.
  8. Check the next electricity statement to confirm Intelligent Octopus Go is still active and billed from half-hourly data.

What if the online journey will not split the fuels?

The public rules and tariff descriptions support separate gas and electricity arrangements, but an online account may not expose every combination. If self-service tries to change both fuels, do not complete it and hope the electricity tariff survives. Contact the supplier and ask for a gas-only quote or change.

If Octopus says a particular gas offer is available only with both fuels, treat that as a condition of that offer. It is not a general rule that Intelligent Octopus Go requires Octopus gas.

Does separating the fuels make billing harder?

It can mean two accounts, two payments and two customer-service contacts. Keep a simple record of each supplier, tariff, end date, annual usage, exit fee and switch reading. Save final bills and credit refunds too.

Those records make it easier to spot an accidental dual-fuel change, a missing final bill or an electricity tariff that did not remain in place as expected.

The practical conclusion

You can usually keep Intelligent Octopus Go for electricity while making a separate choice for gas. Treat each fuel as its own contract decision, then confirm that the quote and account journey match that intention.

Keep Intelligent Octopus Go only if the whole-home electricity figures still work. Choose the gas tariff on its own annual cost and terms. If the account journey is not explicit, get written confirmation before accepting the change.
